Open circuit in selector wiring
A break in the wiring between the gear selector and the module, so the vehicle cannot tell which range the driver has chosen. On a vehicle with electronic selection there is no mechanical linkage as a fallback — the wiring is the only path, and losing it means the transmission acts on no instruction at all.
The response is conservative and often startling. A module that cannot read the selector holds the current gear, refuses to leave park, or drops to neutral, and the vehicle may become immobile in a way that looks far more serious than a broken wire. A selector display showing dashes or nothing while the lever moves normally is the signature.
Where it breaks is predictable. The harness runs through the centre console, so it is disturbed by trim removal, spilled drinks and anything stored around the lever; a multi-contact selector uses several wires and losing one gives a partial fault where some ranges register and others do not. Watch the reported range through the whole travel of the lever — a gap where one position reports nothing locates the circuit, and a break that only appears when the console is loaded points at a chafe rather than a connector.
