What to do
Confirm the dashboard shows P before leaving the vehicle, every time, rather than trusting the lever position — on this kind of selector the lever tells you nothing. Always apply the parking brake as well, since it is mechanically independent of all of this and will hold the car if the transmission does not. If the vehicle will not come out of park, look for a shift-lock release in the console before assuming it needs recovery.
What this code means
A fault in the sensor reporting where the gear lever is. On a shift-by-wire selector the lever's position is measured in two axes — X across the gate, Y fore and aft — so every valid position is a coordinate pair, and the module reads the pair rather than a set of switches. The two axes give useful redundancy: a reading that is plausible in one axis but impossible in the other is detectable as a fault rather than acted on as a gear request.
What makes this worth more than a circuit description is the thing shift-by-wire changes and most drivers have never been told. There is no mechanical connection between the lever and the gearbox. Moving the selector to park sends a request; the park pawl is engaged by an actuator that acts on it. In an ordinary column or floor selector, a cable physically pulls the pawl into place and park is a mechanical fact. Here it is a transaction, and a transaction can fail.
The practical consequence is that on these vehicles the display is the confirmation, not the lever. This is especially true of monostable selectors, which spring back to a central resting position after every input and therefore look identical whatever gear is engaged. Manufacturers added automatic park-on-exit and door-open warnings precisely because the failure mode — leaving a vehicle that was never actually in park — is easy to reach and expensive to discover.
