What to do
Normal gear selection usually still works while the sideways gate — manual or sport mode — stops responding. That specific combination is worth reporting, because it identifies which of the two sensor axes has failed.
What this code means
A fault in the axis measuring lever movement across the gate — the sideways motion that separates the automatic positions from a manual or sport gate on selectors that have both.
Losing this axis alone has a characteristic effect: fore-and-aft movement is still read correctly, so ordinary gear selection works, while anything requiring the lever to be moved sideways stops being recognised. A driver who reports that the car drives normally but will no longer enter manual mode has described exactly this without knowing it.
