What to do
Note whether the fault appears in one selector position or in all of them. A problem confined to one or two positions points firmly at the sensor rather than its wiring, and that observation is worth more to a workshop than the code number.
Mention any drink spilled near the gear selector, even months ago. On most cars this sensor sits directly under the centre console, and liquid damage there is one of the commonest causes of exactly this fault. It is not an obvious thing to volunteer and it routinely saves a diagnosis.
Expect the car to be cautious with you until it is fixed. Because the module will not act on a gear request it cannot verify, a car with this fault may refuse to leave park, may decline to select reverse, or may hold one gear. That behaviour is deliberate rather than a second fault developing.
What this code means
The gear lever position sensor — this code concerns sensor A — reports what the driver asked for, which on a shift-by-wire car is a different question from what the gearbox is doing. There is no cable or rod between the lever and the transmission — the lever is an input device, and its sensor is the only thing that knows a selection was made at all.
That is why there is more than one of them. Sensors A, B, C and D are deliberate redundancy: the module compares them, and a selection is only acted on when they agree. The corpus documents the earlier generation of the same idea at P0820, where the pair is described as X and Y rather than lettered.
"Range/Performance" here means the sensors disagreed, or one of them reported a position that cannot be true. The signal is present — an open or shorted circuit has its own code in this family — but it is not believable. This is the redundancy doing its job rather than failing, and it is worth reading that way: the module has caught a sensor drifting before it acted on a gear request nobody made.
The commonest physical causes are unglamorous and specific to where the lever sits. A console-mounted selector is directly beneath the cup holders, so a spilled drink reaches the sensor and its connector far more often than any electrical fault does, and the symptom then appears days later as corrosion spreads. Wear in the detent mechanism produces the other pattern — a fault that appears only in one or two selector positions and is correct everywhere else, which is strong evidence against the wiring.
