Seized or binding wastegate linkage
The rod, arm and pivot that open the wastegate flap, stiffened or seized by carbon and corrosion. The linkage sits in the exhaust housing's heat and is exposed to road spray from underneath, so it corrodes from outside and cokes from inside — a combination few other mechanisms face.
Its faults arrive in a recognisable order, and where a vehicle sits on that progression decides the repair. First the actuator overcomes the friction slowly, which reads as slow boost response; then the module's position adaptation runs out of range; then the flap stops controlling at all. Cleaning is a genuine repair at the first stage and rarely enough at the last.
Which direction it sticks decides the symptoms. Stuck closed produces overboost and a protective power cut, because nothing is bleeding exhaust past the turbine. Stuck open produces underboost and a flat, gutless engine, since gas that should be spinning the turbine is bypassing it.
A distinctive test costs nothing: move the rod by hand with the engine cold. A healthy linkage moves freely and returns; a binding one does not. Check for play at the same time — a worn pivot lets the flap rattle, which is a common source of a chattering noise at light load that owners mistake for something loose in the exhaust.
