Say whether the car feels flat or hesitant for the first minute from cold and then pulls normally. That pattern fits this fault and is worth reporting.

Ask whether the turbocharger's vane or wastegate mechanism can be cleaned. A mechanism that only sticks when cold is an early warning — it will seize completely in time, and cleaning it now is much cheaper than a turbocharger later.

Mention what sort of journeys the car does. Short, cold trips are what let soot build up on the mechanism in the first place, and regular longer runs genuinely slow it down.

Worth fixing even though it clears once warm, because most harmful emissions are produced in that first minute.

What this code means

Boost control did not do what the cold-start strategy asked of it.

Using a turbocharger to warm a catalyst is not obvious, and the reason is worth explaining. A turbine extracts energy from the exhaust — which means it also extracts heat, and on a cold start that heat is exactly what the catalyst downstream needs.

So the strategy does the opposite of what performance would suggest. It positions the vanes or the wastegate to let exhaust gas past the turbine rather than through it, keeping the heat in the gas so it reaches the catalyst instead of spinning the compressor. On some engines it does the reverse — closing the vanes to raise exhaust back-pressure and load the engine, which also makes heat.

Either way this code says the commanded position was not achieved during that window.

The causes are the boost-control family's, and cold start is simply when they show first:

  • Soot binding the vane mechanism, which is stiffest when cold.
  • A sticking wastegate linkage, for the same reason.
  • A vacuum supply that is weak until the engine has run, on vacuum-actuated systems.

A mechanism that only sticks when cold is the classic presentation here, and it is an early warning — the same mechanism will seize altogether in time. Cleaning it now is far cheaper than a turbocharger later.

Expect ordinary boost codes to follow if it is left.
