P22D3: Turbocharger Turbine Inlet Valve Stuck Closed
What to do
Ease off and get this looked at rather than driving it hard. With the handover between the turbochargers stuck, the small turbocharger is being driven beyond its safe speed and exhaust pressure is building — that damages the turbo and is hard on the engine's exhaust valves.
Say whether the car feels strong low down and then strained or flat at higher revs, and mention any change in exhaust note. Both fit this fault.
Ask whether the valve can be freed and cleaned. It sits directly in the hot exhaust and seizing is the normal end of its life — cleaning works while the spindle is still sound.
Expect the vehicle to limit power. That is protection rather than an additional fault.
What this code means
The valve routing exhaust gas between the two turbines is stuck closed.
This is the exhaust-side counterpart of the compressor outlet switching valve, and the two work as a pair. The switching valve manages the air; this one manages the gas that drives it.
At low engine speed the valve is closed, so all the exhaust passes through the small high-pressure turbine — which is what gives a two-stage system its immediate low-speed response. As flow rises it opens, diverting gas around the small turbine to the large low-pressure one, which can handle the volume.
Stuck closed means every bit of exhaust keeps going through the small turbine at high engine speed.
That is worse than the intake-side fault, because it acts directly on the turbine. Exhaust back-pressure rises sharply, which costs power and loads the engine's exhaust valves, and the high-pressure turbocharger is driven beyond its design speed. Bearing failure follows.
This valve has a harder environment than any other in the system. It sits directly in the exhaust stream at full temperature, so soot bakes onto its spindle and its bushes wear. Seizure is the ordinary end of its life rather than an unusual failure.
Cleaning works while the spindle is sound, which is the argument for acting on the slow-response codes in this block rather than waiting for this one.
Expect an audible change — a two-stage system that will not hand over often sounds strained at higher revs.
