Cause
Worn gear selector linkage
Wear in the cables or bushes between lever and gearbox. The gearbox selects a gear the driver did not ask for, or falls between two, so the range sensor reports an implausible position and gets replaced — while the slack that caused it is still there.
Typically specialist work. Needs equipment or training most home workshops do not have.
