P0706: Transmission Range Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance
What to do
Note whether the fault appears in one particular selector position or in all of them; a problem confined to one or two positions points firmly at the sensor rather than its wiring. Expect harsh shifting until it is repaired.
What this code means
The range sensor is producing a signal, but not a believable one. The typical failure is a reading that corresponds to no valid selector position, or to two positions at once — most range sensors use several parallel contacts whose pattern encodes the gear, and a worn or contaminated track can close two at the same time. A position that disagrees with what the vehicle is plainly doing, such as reporting park while road speed climbs, produces the same conclusion.
Wear is concentrated where the selector spends its life. A sensor that misbehaves only around drive and neutral, and reads correctly in park and reverse, is describing a worn track rather than a failed device — and that pattern is worth reporting, because it is strong evidence against the wiring.
