P026D: Fuel Injection Quantity A Higher Than Expected

What to do

Ask for the mass airflow sensor to be checked first. The module works this fault out by comparing fuel against air, so a sensor under-reading air makes correct fuelling look excessive — and that is both the commonest cause and one of the cheapest.

Say whether fuel consumption has actually got worse. If it genuinely has, the extra fuel is real and the cause is something making the engine work harder. If economy is unchanged, the measurement is more likely at fault.

Mention black smoke from the exhaust, which suggests the over-fuelling is real rather than apparent.

Worth fixing rather than ignoring. Persistent over-fuelling loads the particulate filter faster than it can clear itself and washes fuel past the piston rings into the oil.

What this code means

The engine is delivering more fuel than the module's own calculation says it should need.

This is a plausibility check on the fuelling itself rather than a fault in any one component. The module knows how much air it is drawing, how much load it is carrying and how much fuel it commanded — and it has concluded that the fuel figure does not fit the other two.

Reading it correctly means asking whether the extra fuel is real or apparent.

  • The fuel may genuinely be higher, because the engine needs it. Anything that costs the engine efficiency makes it demand more fuel for the same work — a blocked air filter, a dragging brake, a slipping clutch, low compression, or a turbocharger that is not delivering boost.
  • The fuel may be higher than commanded, because something is delivering it uncommanded. A leaking injector adds fuel the module never asked for, and the module compensates elsewhere.
  • The measurement may be wrong. An airflow sensor reading low makes a correct fuel quantity look excessive by comparison, which is the commonest single cause and one of the cheapest.

Check the mass airflow reading before anything is dismantled. The module's judgement here is only as good as the air measurement it is comparing against, and a drifting airflow sensor sets this code on an engine that is fuelling perfectly.

Expect visible consequences if it is genuine: black smoke, poor economy, and a particulate filter loading faster than it should.
