P2263: Turbocharger/Supercharger A Boost System Performance
What to do
Ask whether the boost was too low or too high — the answer changes what you should do. Too low is a performance and economy problem: leaks, a blocked intercooler, seized vanes, or a blocked particulate filter making the turbo work against back pressure. Too high is urgent. Overboost raises cylinder pressures beyond design and risks damaging pistons and the head gasket, so drive gently and get it seen quickly. If the car keeps dropping into limp mode under hard acceleration, that is the module protecting the engine and should not be worked around.
What this code means
Boost is present but not what was asked for. Unlike P2262 this code covers both directions, and which one is happening changes the urgency completely.
Underboost is the common case and shares its causes with P2262: leaks, restriction, seized vanes, a tired turbo. Add to those a restriction the corpus meets elsewhere — a blocked particulate filter raises exhaust back pressure, and a turbine trying to work against that cannot deliver commanded boost. Where a filter code is stored alongside this one, they are the same fault and the filter is the thing to address.
Overboost is the case that matters. A wastegate that will not open, or a variable-geometry mechanism stuck in its high-boost position, lets pressure climb past what the engine was designed to take. Cylinder pressures rise, detonation risk rises with them, and the damage is to pistons and head gaskets. Most modules cut power hard when they detect it, which is protective — so a car that suddenly drops into limp mode under acceleration and recovers after a restart may be doing exactly the right thing.
If boost is over rather than under, treat it as urgent and drive gently. That is the one branch of this code where continuing to press on causes engine damage rather than merely disappointing performance.
