Particulate filter warning light illuminated

The dedicated exhaust filter warning light — distinct from the engine management light, though the two often appear together. It usually means the filter is loading with soot and needs a regeneration to complete, and on many vehicles it is a request rather than a fault report: drive at sustained speed and load for a period and it will clear itself.

Ignoring it is what turns a free fix into an expensive one. Each interrupted regeneration leaves more soot than it removes, so the filter loads further, and a light that would have cleared on one motorway run becomes a blocked filter requiring forced regeneration or replacement.

Two things are worth checking alongside. Repeated short journeys are the usual reason regeneration never completes, and no amount of diagnosis changes that. And on vehicles using a fuel-borne catalyst, the additive may simply have run out — a consumable most owners have never heard of, which stops the filter regenerating properly and is inexpensive to refill.

What this usually means

On many vehicles this lamp is a request rather than a fault report: the filter has loaded with soot and the car wants a regeneration completed. Drive at sustained speed and load for a period and it clears itself.

The instructions are specific and worth following literally, because half-measures do not work. German guidance converges on around fifteen minutes of continuous driving above roughly 60 km/h, or a steady speed in a high gear keeping engine speed above about 2,000 rpm — the point being sustained exhaust temperature, which a town journey never reaches.

Ignoring it turns a free fix into an expensive one, and there is a second cost people do not know about. During an active regeneration the management injects extra fuel to raise exhaust temperature, and some of that fuel does not burn — it runs past the rings into the sump. So repeatedly interrupting regenerations dilutes the engine oil and raises its level, and German references are explicit that this can damage or destroy the engine. An oil level that has risen above the maximum on a diesel that does short journeys is a warning in its own right, and it is worth checking whenever this lamp has been on for a while.
