P02D6: Cylinder 6 Fuel Injector A Offset Learning At Min Limit

What to do

Ask for the fuel return lines to be checked, not just the injector. On a six-cylinder engine this cylinder is at the end of the return chain, and a restricted or perished return line raises pressure there and imitates a worn injector convincingly.

That check is cheap and is often skipped, so it is worth asking for by name before an injector is ordered.

Check the oil level and smell it. Over-delivery on a cylinder washes diesel into the sump, and a level above maximum on a diesel needs prompt attention rather than waiting for the next service.

Ask for a leak-back test across all six once the return circuit has been confirmed clear.

The correction the module applies to cylinder 6's injector has reached the bottom of its adjustment range.

Cylinder 6 over-delivers and the module can trim it no further.

On a straight six this is the last cylinder and the furthest from the high pressure pump, which gives its return circuit particular significance. Common rail injectors return fuel continuously through a low pressure line that daisy-chains along the engine, and the cylinder at the end of that chain sees the accumulated return flow of every injector upstream of it.

A restricted return line therefore raises back pressure most at the far end, which changes how that injector meters — and reads as over-delivery. The injector is sound; its return path is not.

This is worth checking specifically because it is cheap, commonly overlooked, and produces a convincing imitation of a worn injector. Perished return hoses, a blocked return filter, or a leaking connector at the far end are all ordinary findings on a high-mileage engine.

A leak-back test detects a worn injector but can be misread when return pressure is abnormal, so establish that the return circuit is clear before interpreting the leak-back figures.

Where the return circuit is sound, the ordinary causes apply — a worn needle and seat, a leaking injector, or a calibration code never entered.
