P02CC: Cylinder 1 Fuel Injector A Offset Learning At Min Limit

What to do

Ask directly whether the injector calibration codes are correctly programmed for every cylinder. This is the first thing to check and it is free. Modern diesel injectors each carry a code that must be entered into the engine module when they are fitted — an injector installed without its code, or a reconditioned one still carrying its original code, produces exactly this fault with a physically sound part.

Mention any injector work at all, including work done by a previous owner if you know of it.

Do not put this off. The module has been compensating for a drifting injector for a long time and has now run out of adjustment — so the fault has been developing quietly and will get worse from here, not better.

Ask for all the injectors to be leak-back tested rather than just this one, because a set that is drifting together is a different repair decision from one that has failed.

The correction the module applies to cylinder 1's injector has reached the bottom of its adjustment range.

Understanding what offset learning is makes this whole family straightforward, and it is one of the more useful things to know about a modern diesel. No two injectors deliver identically. Manufacturing tolerance, wear and deposits all shift how much fuel a given opening command actually produces. So the module measures each injector's real delivery and learns a per-cylinder correction — a small trim, applied continuously, that equalises the cylinders.

That correction has limits, and this code says one has been reached. The module has trimmed cylinder 1 as far down as it is permitted to and the cylinder is still out of line. The software has run out of authority; the hardware is now outside what compensation can hide.

Which makes this materially more serious than it sounds. Everything looked fine until the trim ran out — the injector has been drifting for a long time and the module has been quietly concealing it. The code marks the end of that concealment, not the start of the problem.

The first question is always whether an injector was fitted without its calibration code. Every modern diesel injector carries a code that must be programmed in when it is installed, and one fitted without it starts life needing a correction far outside the normal range — which lands here immediately.

A reconditioned injector fitted with its original code does the same thing, because reconditioning changes the very characteristics the code describes.
