What to do

This code says the engine is not making the power it should, without saying why — so the answer is almost never a single named part.

Ask for all the stored codes to be read and considered together. This one is usually the consequence of another, and treating it on its own leads to guesses. If there are boost, fuel, exhaust or misfire codes alongside it, those are the fault and this is the evidence.

Describe what you actually notice, because it narrows things quickly: flat everywhere, or only when accelerating hard; worse when hot, or when cold; a warning that came with a sudden change, or a car that has been gradually getting slower for months.

Mention the servicing history, especially fuel and air filters, which are cheap, commonly overdue, and genuinely capable of producing this.

On a hybrid, mention worsening fuel economy, since a petrol engine falling short makes the electric side work harder and that is often the first sign.

What this code means

The engine is producing less torque than the module calculated it should be.

This is a conclusion rather than a fault, and treating it as a fault is the mistake this page exists to prevent. The module runs a torque model: from air mass, fuel quantity, ignition timing, engine speed and temperature it predicts what the crankshaft should be delivering. It then compares that against what is actually happening — through the rate the engine accelerates, through what the transmission and the hybrid system report back, and on many vehicles through a measured resistance to the load it applied. When the two disagree by enough for long enough, this code is stored.

So it names the shortfall, not the reason for it. Anything that quietly costs power sets it:

  • Air. A boost leak between turbocharger and inlet, a restricted air filter, a turbocharger not reaching its target, or an EGR valve stuck open diluting every charge.
  • Fuel. Weak delivery, a failing pump, ageing injectors, or a filter overdue by a long way.
  • Exhaust. A particulate filter or catalyst restricting flow, which strangles the engine as effectively as blocking its intake.
  • Timing. Ignition retarded because knock is being heard, or valve timing that has drifted with a stretched chain.
  • Mechanical condition. Low compression across a cylinder, a burnt valve, or worn bores — the honest answer when everything electrical checks out.

The single most useful thing to do is read every stored code and treat this one as the last item, not the first. On a healthy diagnostic list this code has company, and the company is the fault.

It matters more on a hybrid than on a conventional car, which is worth knowing. A hybrid's control strategy budgets engine torque and motor torque together. An engine quietly short of its promised output makes the electric side compensate, so the battery drains faster, the engine runs more often, and the first complaint is poor economy rather than poor performance.

Note the spelling. The reference dataset stores Insufficent; the corpus corrects it, as it corrects the handful of other transcription errors that source carries — the list is declared in database/tools/corpus-titles.php so no batch has to remember it.
