What to do
The engine will pull normally. What changes is how other systems behave around it: gearchanges that have become firmer or more deliberate, and traction or stability control that intervenes more abruptly than it used to, using the brakes where it would previously have just eased the power off.
Neither is a fault in the gearbox or the brakes. The engine module reports back how much torque it is producing, those systems use that answer, and with the answer missing they take the cautious route — which is the correct behaviour, and is what you are feeling.
If a code from the P2544 to P2551 group is stored as well, mention it: those are the same conversation in the opposite direction, and both together usually means one connector or one shared earth rather than two separate faults.
What this code means
A fault in the circuit by which the engine module reports back how much torque it is actually delivering.
This is the return leg of the arrangement P2544 describes, and the pair is worth understanding together because a fault in one looks like a fault in the other and they mean opposite things.
- The request is inbound: another module asking the engine to make less torque.
- The feedback is outbound: the engine module answering what it did about it.
The loop is closed because a system that asks for a torque reduction has to know whether it got one, and has milliseconds to decide what to do if it did not. Stability control cutting torque to stop a spinning wheel needs confirmation the cut took effect; if it did not, its next move is to brake that wheel instead, and it cannot make that decision on hope. The transmission has a slower but equally real need — clutch apply pressures are calculated for the torque passing through them, so a shift scheduled for a torque figure the transmission cannot verify is a shift made blind.
Here is the consequence, and it is the mirror image of P2544's. Losing the feedback does not stop the engine reducing torque. It stops the other modules trusting that it did. So the engine drives normally, and the systems that depend on the answer become conservative:
- Traction and stability control fall back on brakes, because braking a wheel is something they can verify themselves. The car feels blunter and grabbier where it used to simply ease off.
- The transmission takes the cautious option, which usually means firmer, earlier or more deliberate gearchanges — protecting the clutches against a torque it can no longer confirm.
So the reading to take from this code is: the engine is fine and is being distrusted. That is a genuinely different conclusion from P2544, where the engine is fine and is being held back, and telling them apart from the driver's seat is straightforward — a request fault takes power away, a feedback fault does not.
