What to do
Act now, while the forced-regeneration window is open — the difference between this week and next month can be the difference between a workshop procedure and a four-figure filter. Expect derates meanwhile; they protect the filter from an unsafe burn. And insist the cause is named — trips, sensor, or soot source — because a cleared or new filter behind an unanswered cause refills on schedule.
What this code means
The particulate filter has accumulated soot beyond what ordinary regeneration can clear — the code the whole P2002 family's warnings have been pointing toward, and the last exit before the filter becomes a part.
How a filter gets here is nearly always a story, not an event: months of short trips aborting burns (P2458), a sensor or hose mis-teaching the soot estimate (P2452), an upstream fault making soot faster than schedule (P2459), or a suspended regeneration nobody investigated (P2031's argument). By the time this code stores, passive and normal active regeneration have both been outrun — the filter is too full to light safely, because burning a grossly overloaded filter risks the uncontrolled exotherm that cracks substrates.
What remains is a ladder, and position on it is money. First: a forced regeneration — stationary, scan-tool-controlled, hotter and longer than the automatic kind — which clears a genuinely full filter in most cases caught at this stage. Beyond a threshold the tool refuses, and the options become off-car cleaning or replacement. So this code is urgent in the specific sense that the window is closing while the car still drives: every sooty mile climbs the ladder. And whatever clears it, the story that filled the filter needs answering, or the new state lasts exactly one repetition of the story.
