What to do
Ask for the grille area to be physically inspected before anything is replaced. These shutters sit right behind the grille and catch leaves, plastic bags, stones and packed insects — an obstruction is a common cause and costs nothing to clear.
Mention any front-end damage or bumper work, however minor. A shutter assembly bent slightly out of true will not close, and that is easily missed.
In freezing weather, suspect ice. Water in the mechanism freezes and holds the vanes open, which needs no repair once understood.
This is the safe direction of failure — cooling is never restricted, so there is no overheating risk. What it costs is fuel at motorway speed, and on an electric car, range.

The second set of active grille shutters is stuck in the open position.
Active grille shutters are one of the least visible efficiency features on a modern car and one of the more consequential when they fail. They are motorised vanes behind the grille that close at speed, because an open grille is aerodynamically expensive — air entering the engine bay and tumbling out contributes a measurable share of drag. Closing them when cooling is not needed cuts that drag, and closing them from cold speeds warm-up.
Stuck off means stuck open, and it is the safe direction of the two — cooling is never restricted. The costs are real but gradual:
- Higher drag, so worse economy at motorway speed.
- Slower warm-up, so a longer cold-start period and more emissions.
- On an electric vehicle, reduced range, since drag dominates at speed.
Two shutter assemblies means an upper and a lower set, so establish which this vehicle calls B before working on it.
