P050E: Cold Start Engine Exhaust Temperature Too Low
What to do
Say whether the car takes a long time to warm up, or whether the heater is slow to give heat. A thermostat stuck open is a common cause here — the engine never gets hot, so neither does the exhaust — and it is a relatively cheap repair.
Say what kind of journeys the car does. Very short trips can produce this on a healthy vehicle, because the strategy simply runs out of road.
Ask what else is stored. If there is another cold-start fault alongside this one, that is likely the cause and this is the consequence — one repair should clear both.
It matters even though the car drives normally. Most of a journey's harmful emissions come out before the catalytic converter warms up, so this is squarely an MOT and emissions concern.
What this code means
The exhaust did not get hot enough during the cold-start period.
This is the outcome code of the whole cold-start family — the one that measures whether the strategy worked, rather than whether an individual part of it was applied.
Everything else in this family is a means to this end. Retarded ignition, raised idle, specific camshaft timing and boost control all exist for one purpose: get the catalytic converter to light-off temperature before the driver reaches the end of the road. This code says they collectively failed.
Which makes reading the stored codes together essential. If an idle, timing or camshaft cold-start code is stored alongside this one, that is the cause and this is the symptom. Fixing the specific fault clears both.
Where this code stands alone, the causes are the ones that remove heat rather than fail to produce it:
- A thermostat stuck open, so coolant circulates through the radiator immediately and the engine never warms.
- Extremely short journeys, which are a usage pattern rather than a fault.
- An exhaust gas temperature sensor reading low, in which case the exhaust was hot and the measurement is wrong.
- An exhaust leak before the sensor, admitting cold air and diluting the sample.
The consequence is the point. A catalyst that lights off late lets a large share of a journey's total emissions straight through — which is why this matters despite the car driving perfectly.
