What to do
Mention what equipment is fitted to the vehicle and who installed it. This code concerns the power take-off that drives a tipper, crane, refrigeration unit or similar, and the wiring added by the body builder is much more often at fault than anything the vehicle manufacturer supplied.
Say whether the problem is the equipment not working, or the vehicle driving oddly. Those point in different directions — the second usually means the engine thinks the equipment is engaged when it is not.
Do not work around an interlock that is preventing engagement. They exist to stop things like a tipper body being raised while the vehicle is moving.
Have both the vehicle's diagnostics and the equipment installer's documentation available, since the fault often sits between the two.
What this code means
A fault has been reported by or about the power take-off control module.
A power take-off drives something other than the wheels from the engine or gearbox — a tipper body, a crane, a refrigeration unit, a mixer drum, a winch. So this code belongs to working vehicles, and on a van or truck it is far more likely to concern the equipment than the engine.
PTO operation changes what the engine module is allowed to do, which is why the engine module knows about it at all. With a PTO engaged, the engine may need to hold a fixed speed regardless of the pedal, ignore road speed limits on idle strategy, and refuse to allow the vehicle to be driven off. Those interlocks are safety-critical: a tipper body raised while the vehicle moves is a serious hazard.
So a fault here can present in two quite different ways and it is worth saying which:
- The equipment will not operate, because the module cannot confirm it is safe to engage.
- The vehicle behaves oddly on the road — refusing to rev, holding a fixed idle, or limiting speed — because the engine module believes a PTO is engaged when it is not.
That second case is the one that gets misdiagnosed as an engine fault, and it is usually a stuck engagement switch or a corroded connector on the body builder's wiring rather than anything the vehicle manufacturer supplied.
Ask who fitted the equipment. Bodywork wiring is frequently the weak point.
