What to do

Say what equipment is fitted to this vehicle and who installed it. The wiring added by the body builder is much more often at fault than anything the vehicle manufacturer supplied, and having their documentation available saves a great deal of diagnostic time.

Say whether the problem is that the equipment will not run, or that the vehicle drives strangely. Those point in opposite directions — the second usually means the engine thinks the equipment is engaged when it is not.

Do not bypass an interlock that is stopping the equipment engaging. They exist to prevent things like a tipper body being raised while the vehicle is moving.

Mention any recent work on the body or its wiring, however minor.

What this code means

The circuit telling the engine module whether the power take-off is engaged is reading above its valid range.

A power take-off drives equipment rather than wheels — a tipper body, a crane, a mixer drum, a refrigeration unit — and the engine module needs to know when one is engaged, because it must behave completely differently. With a PTO running it may hold a fixed engine speed regardless of the pedal, ignore its normal idle strategy, and refuse to let the vehicle be driven off.

The sense circuit is the feedback confirming engagement, as distinct from the switch requesting it. This code says that feedback is not readable, and reading high means an open circuit or a short to a supply voltage.

Which way the vehicle then behaves is worth predicting, and it is the source of the complaint:

  • If the module concludes the PTO is engaged when it is not, the vehicle drives oddly on the road — refusing to rev, holding a fixed idle, or limiting speed. That gets diagnosed as an engine fault and is not one.
  • If it concludes the PTO is disengaged when it is not, the interlocks that should prevent driving off are gone — which is the safety-relevant direction.

Body builder wiring is far more often at fault than anything the vehicle manufacturer supplied. Ask who fitted the equipment and get their documentation, because the fault usually sits between the two looms rather than in either.

Do not work around an interlock that is preventing engagement. They exist to stop a tipper body being raised while the vehicle moves.
