Shift quality may change from journey to journey with no obvious pattern. Worth fixing before it becomes permanent — and mention if the vehicle has recently had transmission work, since a connector disturbed and not fully reseated is a common trigger.
What this code means
The fluid temperature signal is dropping out or jumping erratically rather than failing outright. The gearbox connector is the first suspect: it sits in a hot, wet, vibrating place, and on many transmissions the internal harness passes through a sealed pass-through connector where fluid can wick along the wire strands and separate a crimp from the inside. That failure is invisible externally and produces exactly this kind of unstable reading.
