What to do
Note which gears still work — the pattern identifies which half of the mechanism has failed. If faults for both directions are stored, that usually means one shared cause rather than two failures, which is a smaller repair than it sounds.
What this code means
A circuit fault in the drive that moves the shift mechanism the other way along the gate — the counterpart to P0920 and the second half of the pair.
What makes reading these two together worthwhile is that they fail independently and their symptoms are complementary. Losing this direction removes the opposite set of gears from the one P0920 takes: where that code might leave a car with odd gears only, this one leaves it with even gears only. Codes for both directions stored together point at something they share — a common supply, a connector carrying both circuits, or the module's driver stage — rather than at two actuators failing at once.
Despite the name, this is about the direction of shift travel rather than about reverse gear. Reverse gear itself is engaged through its own plane like any other.
