Gear Shift Actuator
Moves an automated manual gearbox along the gate to actually engage a gear, once the gate select actuator has chosen the plane. Its failures are distinguishable from select failures by symptom: where a select fault removes gears in groups, a shift fault leaves the gearbox reaching the right plane and failing to complete, which strands an automated manual in neutral revving with no drive — something a torque-converter automatic cannot do. Because it works to a fixed force and a timeout rather than pressing harder like a hand would, it is also unusually sensitive to synchroniser wear.
