P0BBE: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Voltage Variation
What to do
Ask for the actual cell group voltages and the spread between highest and lowest — that single number tells you more about the battery's remaining life than any percentage, and it is the right thing to have on record before deciding anything. If one group is the outlier, ask whether its sense wiring has been checked and whether module-level replacement is supported: one bad group out of twenty-six is a far smaller repair than the range loss suggests.
What this code means
The cell groups in the traction battery are no longer at the same voltage as each other.
This is the code the twenty-six sense circuits at P0B3B–P0BBC exist to make possible, and it is the most informative number a battery pack produces. Total pack voltage says almost nothing about health; the spread between the highest and lowest group says almost everything.
Some variation is normal and inevitable. Cells are manufactured to a tolerance, they sit at different places in the pack and therefore at different temperatures, and they age at slightly different rates. The module corrects for this continuously by balancing — bleeding a little charge out of whichever groups are running high until the string evens up. So this code does not mean the pack is unbalanced. It means balancing has stopped winning, either because the spread is growing faster than it can be corrected or because something is preventing the correction.
Why it matters more than a state-of-health percentage: a series string is limited by its worst member. Every group carries the same current, so the weakest reaches its lower limit first on discharge and its upper limit first on charge, and the module has to stop for the whole pack. One group out of twenty-six therefore costs range out of all proportion to its size — which is why variation predicts remaining usable life better than any single figure on a dashboard.
And the usual caution applies with force here: a sense circuit that lies produces apparent variation on a perfectly even pack. Before a pack is condemned on this code, the wiring behind the outlying group has to be eliminated.
