Cause
Hybrid battery pack deterioration
The traction battery ageing — capacity shrinking and internal resistance climbing, which every pack does from the day it is built. As a cause, it explains far more than its own codes: an aged pack demands constant charging (overworking the generator and its inverter), cannot deliver the current a healthy motor needs (so motors "underperform"), runs hotter for the same work, and sags to the state-of-charge floor faster than management can compensate. A tired battery is the commonest reason healthy hybrid components report trouble, which is why a battery health report belongs near the start of most hybrid diagnoses rather than the end.
The signature the driver sees is the charge display swinging full-to-empty in minutes — the weakest cell group defines the whole pack's window, and divergence narrows it. Two things to check before anyone pays: the warranty (traction packs are covered for eight years or more in many markets) and the per-block data (one or two collapsed modules often explain the verdict, and module-level repair exists). And the fan: packs age early when their cooling fan is choked, so the cause behind this cause is often dust.
Typically specialist work. Needs equipment or training most home workshops do not have.

Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
