P0E44: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Voltage Sense E Circuit
What to do
Expect reduced power and possibly restricted charging. If a battery replacement has been quoted, ask whether the sense wiring was checked first — a high-resistance sense line and a genuinely weak pack give the same reading, and one of them is a connector.
What this code means
The circuit for one of the traction battery's pack voltage sense taps is faulty.
Pack voltage sense E and F continue a run that began at P0ABA and P0B14 with A to D, and reaching a sixth tap says something about the pack.
These are pack-level measurements, tapped at points across the whole series string — not the per-cell-group layer at P0B3B, which has twenty-six channels of its own. Six taps means a pack long enough that measuring it at four points was no longer enough to localise a problem, which in practice means a large, high-voltage battery.
The argument these codes carry is the most expensive misdiagnosis in electric cars, and it is set out in full at P0B14. A sense wire with high resistance and a genuinely weak section of pack produce the same reading. One is a connector; the other is a battery. The discriminator is that a battery cannot change instantly — so a reading that steps rather than drifts is wiring, and a reading that sags under load and recovers slowly is chemistry.
Check the wiring before the pack, every time. The failure mode of not doing so is a battery replaced for a corroded terminal.
