P0E74: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Internal Isolation Fault

What to do

Have this looked at promptly, and mention it before anyone works on the car. Isolation is what makes a high-voltage system safe to be near, and this says the loss is inside the battery itself. The car will usually still drive, but do not put off the inspection — the common causes are coolant or moisture inside the pack, and both get worse. If the fault comes and goes with the weather, report it anyway.

What this code means

The traction battery has lost electrical isolation, and the leak is inside the pack.

The corpus now carries three isolation codes and the difference between them is location, which is the entire diagnosis. P0AA6 is the monitoring system reporting a loss somewhere. P0DAA narrows it to the charging path — the inlet, the charger, the charging contactors. This one narrows it to inside the battery pack itself, and that is the worst of the three.

Why isolation matters is at P0D0E: a traction system floats, with neither pole connected to the bodyshell, so touching one pole and the car does not complete a circuit through you. A single isolation fault is not yet dangerous — that is the point of a floating system — but the margin is gone, and the second fault is the one nobody sees coming.

Internal means the pack has to be opened, and the realistic causes are all ones that get worse rather than better. Coolant inside the pack, from a failed cooling plate seal or a chafed hose, which is both a conductor and a thing that spreads. Condensation, from a breather or seal that has failed. A cell that has vented, releasing electrolyte. Or accident damage, including damage from an impact that seemed minor.

None of those is a wait-and-see fault, and a car that stores this intermittently in wet weather has not fixed itself between times.
