P2111: Throttle Actuator A Control System — Stuck Open

Do not keep driving

Stop driving and have it recovered. The engine will be cutting and surging as the module cuts fuel to control an airflow it cannot otherwise limit — that protection is working, but the car is unpredictable and may stop without warning. It will not run away with you; the risk is the unpredictability, not runaway acceleration.

What this code means

The throttle plate is stuck open and the module cannot close it. This is the failure drive-by-wire is designed around, and understanding what actually happens is worth more than the alarm the phrase provokes.

The engine does not run away. A stuck-open throttle admits air the driver did not ask for, but the module still controls fuel and spark, and its response is to cut them — which is why a stuck throttle produces a bucking, gutless engine or an outright shutdown rather than unintended acceleration. The protection is real and it works. The corresponding code is often P2105, forced engine shutdown, stored alongside this one.

What it does produce is an engine that is unpredictable to drive: cutting, surging as the module fights the airflow, and possibly stopping altogether. That is not a state to be driving in traffic.

Carbon is the usual cause, and it is the same carbon that produces the milder codes in this range — allowed to build until the plate binds in its bore rather than merely dragging. A throttle body cleaned when P2101 or P2109 first appeared rarely reaches this.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
