P2118: Throttle Actuator A Control Motor Current Range/Performance

What to do

Ask whether the motor current was compared against specification and in which direction it was wrong. High current means something mechanical is stiffening, which usually means a throttle body cleaning; low current points at the motor or its wiring. That distinction decides the whole repair.

What this code means

The current the throttle motor draws is outside the expected window. This is the most directly useful measurement in the whole range, because current is a proxy for mechanical resistance: a motor working against friction draws more to achieve the same movement.

So a rising current trend measures carbon accumulating, long before the throttle actually sticks and long before P2111 or P2112 arrive. A workshop that reads this value and cleans the throttle body has prevented the more serious codes rather than reacted to them.

Current below expectation means the opposite — the motor is not doing the work it should — and points at a partially open winding or a failing driver stage rather than at anything mechanical.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
