P2298: O2 Sensor Out of Range During Deceleration Bank 2 Sensor 1
What to do
The car will usually drive normally. Ask whether the same code is stored for bank 1: if only this bank fails, the sensor or the exhaust on this side is the answer, and if both fail the cause is more likely something shared, such as fuel leaking past an injector during the fuel cut. Have the exhaust checked for leaks ahead of the sensor before replacing it.
What this code means
The deceleration test described at P2297, failed on the second bank's upstream sensor.
The bank comparison is unusually informative for this particular test, because both banks experience the identical condition at the identical moment — the fuel cut applies to the whole engine. So the two sensors are being given the same gas at the same time, which makes any difference between them attributable to the sensors or their exhaust rather than to conditions.
One bank failing while the other passes is therefore a clean result: that sensor is slower, or the exhaust ahead of it leaks. Both failing together points at something shared — most usefully at a leaking injector or a fuel pressure fault putting fuel into the exhaust during the cut, which would blunt the test on both sides at once.
