What to do

The car will usually drive normally and this may be the only sign of anything. It is often an early warning rather than a failure — this test asks the sensor to move further and faster than ordinary driving does, so a sensor that is slowing down fails here before it fails anything else. Ask for an exhaust leak check ahead of the sensor before it is replaced, since a leak lets in air and produces this with a good sensor.

What this code means

The upstream sensor on bank 1 did not read as expected during deceleration. The elegance of this test is that the vehicle creates its own reference condition, free, every time you lift off the throttle.

What happens on overrun. When the throttle closes above idle and the engine is being turned by the wheels, the module cuts fuel entirely — there is no point burning any, since the engine is not doing work. That is deceleration fuel cutoff, and it means the gas passing the sensor is very nearly plain air.

So the module knows what the sensor should say without having to arrange anything. Air is a known quantity. A healthy sensor swings hard to its lean extreme within a moment of the cut and stays there until fuel returns. Anything less — a lazy swing, an incomplete one, a reading that hangs partway — is the sensor failing to follow a gas whose composition is not in doubt.

That makes this a more sensitive test than the ordinary ones, and an earlier warning. Normal closed-loop operation keeps the mixture in a narrow band around ideal, so a sensor that has slowed with age can track it adequately and pass. Overrun asks the sensor to travel its full range quickly, which is the first thing an aging sensor loses. A code here on a car that shows no fuel trim problems is usually a sensor approaching the end of its life rather than one that has failed.

The alternative explanation is worth eliminating first because it costs nothing: an exhaust leak upstream of the sensor admits air continuously, which blunts the contrast between overrun and normal running and can fail this test with a perfectly good sensor.
