P22CE: Turbocharger Compressor Outlet Switching Valve Stuck Closed
What to do
Say whether the car pulls well from low speed and then goes flat as the revs rise. That pattern is characteristic of this fault and is the most useful thing you can report.
Do not keep driving it hard. With the handover between the two turbochargers not happening, the smaller turbo can be pushed beyond its safe speed at high revs — which turns a valve repair into a turbocharger replacement.
Ask whether the valve and its actuator can be cleaned. Carbon binding is the usual cause and these are not cheap assemblies.
Mention any whistling or unusual noise from the engine at higher revs, which would support the turbo being worked beyond its range.
What this code means
The valve routing air between the two compressors is stuck closed.
This code belongs to a two-stage turbocharger system, and knowing how one works makes it readable. A small turbocharger spins up quickly and gives boost at low engine speed, but chokes at high flow. A large one flows freely but is lazy off the line. A two-stage system fits both and hands over between them.
On the intake side, a switching valve controls the path. At low engine speed it is closed, so all the air passes through the small high-pressure compressor. As flow rises it opens, letting air bypass into the large low-pressure compressor and taking the small one out of the equation.
Stuck closed means that handover never happens.
The consequence at high engine speed is the serious one. The small compressor is asked to pass far more air than it was designed for — it becomes a restriction, boost falls away at the top end, and the high-pressure turbocharger can be driven beyond its safe speed. That is a bearing failure waiting to happen.
Carbon and heat are the usual causes. These valves live in the charge air path close to hot components, and their actuators — vacuum or electric — bind or fail.
The symptom is distinctive: strong low-speed response and a marked flatness as the revs rise. A driver saying "it pulls well then just stops pulling" is describing this.
