Because the leak test runs while the vehicle is parked and hours after shutdown, an intermittent fault here is unusually hard to catch: the conditions in which it occurs are precisely the ones nobody is present for. The fault will not reproduce in a workshop with the engine running, which is worth saying out loud before anyone spends time trying.
What that leaves is inspection rather than observation — the connector, the harness where it passes brackets and heat, and any evidence of water having been in the plug. Those are cheap to check and are where nearly all of these live.
