P2409: Fuel Cap Sensor Switch Circuit Range/Performance

What to do

Nothing is at risk. Check the cap is properly seated and that its seal is intact and not perished — a hardened seal can let the switch report correctly while the system still leaks slightly.

What this code means

The fuel cap switch is reporting a state the module cannot reconcile — typically a cap reported present when the leak test says otherwise, or a switch that never changes state at all.

A switch that never changes is worth thinking about: it is not obviously broken, it simply always says the same thing. If it always says "cap fitted", the driver gets no warning when it is not; if it always says "cap missing", the warning becomes noise and stops being read. The second is worse, because a warning that is always on is one nobody acts on — including when it eventually becomes true.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
