What to do
Nothing is at risk and the car drives normally — what has been lost is the vehicle's ability to tell you specifically that the fuel cap is loose, so a future evaporative fault will be less clearly explained. Worth checking the cap is properly tightened anyway, since a loose cap is behind a large share of evaporative warnings and costs nothing to rule out. On a car with a capless filler there is no cap to tighten; look instead for anything trapped in the filler neck holding the flap open.
What this code means
A fault in the circuit of the switch that detects whether the fuel filler cap is fitted and sealed.
This switch exists to answer the single most common question in evaporative diagnostics: is there a leak, or did somebody leave the cap loose? Without it, both produce the same large-leak code, and the vehicle cannot tell the driver which — so the owner sees a check engine light and either ignores it or pays to investigate a hole that does not exist.
That is the entire reason for the folk remedy about tightening your fuel cap, and the folk remedy is right. A loose or missing cap is a genuinely large share of evaporative fault codes, because the cap is the one part of a sealed system that a person opens regularly. A vehicle with this switch can display a specific message instead, which turns a worrying light into a ten-second fix.
So a fault in the switch itself costs that convenience rather than causing a problem: the system still detects leaks, it just loses the ability to name the easy one. Marked low severity for exactly that reason — nothing is threatened, and the leak detection continues to work.
Worth knowing for newer vehicles: capless filler systems have no cap to tighten. They use a spring-loaded flapper and seal instead, so the equivalent failure is a flapper held open by debris or a perished seal — and "check the fuel cap" is advice that cannot be followed. Looking into the filler neck for a trapped object is the equivalent check.
