What this usually means
On high-pressure systems fuel atomises into a fine mist, which is a fire risk rather than only a running problem. A pinhole in a high-pressure line produces a spray fine enough to ignite on a hot surface, and it may leave nothing recognisable as a puddle.
Fuel smell around the vehicle rather than at the tailpipe indicates a leak — and the distinction from an exhaust smell is worth insisting on, because the two have completely different urgencies. Exhaust-side fuel smell is a running fault; a smell around the car is a leak.
Establish where and when. A smell only after filling points at the filler neck, its seal, or the evaporative system. A smell strongest under the bonnet after a run points at the high-pressure side and is the urgent version. A smell at the rear when parked points at the tank, its sender seal, or the vent and canister.
