P2412: Fuel Cap Sensor/Switch Circuit Intermittent/Erratic
What to do
Nothing is at risk. Ask for the connector in the filler recess to be inspected for corrosion — water collects there and this is nearly always the cause.
What this code means
The fuel cap switch reading comes and goes.
One explanation is not a fault at all, and it is worth eliminating first: the cap being genuinely opened and closed. Refuelling changes this switch's state by design, so a reading that changes at intervals matching fill-ups is the switch working. What the module objects to is change that does not correspond to anything — a state flickering while the vehicle is moving, for instance, which no refuelling explains.
Beyond that, the filler recess is a wet, salty place and the answer is usually in the connector.
