Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor
Reports exhaust temperature, and on a diesel is what makes particulate filter regeneration possible and safe — regeneration burns soot at around 600°C, and the module needs to know it has reached that temperature and not exceeded it. A sensor it cannot trust inhibits regeneration entirely, so the filter fills in the background and the vehicle eventually derates: a chain that begins with a cheap sensor and ends with a filter needing specialist cleaning. Its leads are routinely damaged during other exhaust work.
