P24B2: Particulate Matter Sensor Circuit Intermittent
What to do
Try to notice when the light appears — cold mornings, wet weather, rough roads, or after a long run. That pattern is genuinely the most useful thing you can bring to the garage, because an intermittent fault that will not show itself on the ramp is otherwise very hard to pin down.
Ask for the wiring and connector to be inspected and moved while the signal is watched, rather than the sensor simply being replaced. Intermittent faults on this circuit are usually connections, and a new sensor plugged into the same bad connector changes nothing.
Mention if the exhaust has ever sounded loose or rattled, since a broken exhaust mounting lets the pipe move further than the wiring allows and strains the connector.
What this code means
The particulate matter sensor signal is dropping out and returning rather than failing outright.
Intermittent is a description of behaviour, not of a part, and it changes the method entirely. A circuit that fails cleanly can be found with a meter. One that works when you test it cannot — so the diagnosis has to reproduce the fault rather than look for it.
Almost every intermittent on this sensor is mechanical. A connector whose terminal has lost its grip makes contact at rest and loses it over a bump. A harness chafing on the underbody shorts only when the exhaust moves on its mounts. Water in a connector conducts differently as it freezes, warms and dries.
This is the code where wiggling things while watching live data is genuinely the fastest route to an answer, and where replacing the sensor most often fails to fix anything.
Two location-specific causes are worth naming. Exhaust movement — a broken hanger lets the pipe swing further than the harness allows, which strains the connector at exactly one point. And heat cycling, which over years makes a terminal's spring lose tension so it grips when cold and releases when hot.
Record when it happens. Cold mornings, wet weather, rough roads or heavy load each point at a different one of the causes above.
