P2501: Generator Lamp L-Terminal Circuit High
What to do
Check the battery warning bulb before anything else — if it does not light with the ignition on and the engine stopped, the circuit that starts the alternator charging is broken, and the bulb or its holder may be the entire fault. If the battery is discharging, treat it as urgent; a car that stops charging will eventually not restart.
What this code means
The alternator's lamp terminal circuit reads above its valid range — an open circuit, a short to supply, or a lamp path that is not completing.
An open circuit is the more common of these and is exactly the case described at P2500: a blown bulb, a corroded bulb holder, or a broken wire between the cluster and the alternator, any of which removes the excitation current the alternator needs to begin charging.
That makes the physical check unusually productive here. The bulb and its holder cost almost nothing and are the first thing to eliminate, and doing so before an alternator is quoted has saved a great many people a large bill.
