What to do

Check whether the battery warning light comes on when you switch the ignition on with the engine stopped. It should light, then go out once the engine is running. If it never lights at all, that is significant rather than lucky — on most cars the current that flows through that bulb is what starts the alternator charging, so a blown bulb or a broken connection can stop the alternator working entirely. Mention it if the instrument cluster has ever been changed or LED bulbs fitted, since an LED often will not pass enough current to excite the alternator. Expect the battery to discharge if charging has stopped, so treat a dimming or slow-cranking car as urgent.

What this code means

The alternator's lamp terminal circuit reads below its valid range.

This circuit does two jobs, and the second one surprises almost everybody: on most alternators the warning lamp circuit is also what starts the alternator charging.

An alternator generates nothing until its rotor has a magnetic field, and that field is produced electrically rather than by permanent magnets. Before the alternator is spinning it has no output of its own to energise itself with, so it needs an initial current from somewhere else. That current is supplied through the warning lamp. When the ignition is on and the engine is not running, current flows from the battery, through the bulb, into the alternator's field — which is why the lamp is lit. Once the alternator produces its own output, the voltage on both sides of the bulb equalises, no current flows, and the lamp goes out.

Three consequences follow, and all three are met regularly:

  • A blown warning bulb can stop the alternator charging entirely. No excitation current, no field, no output. So a car with a flat battery and a battery warning light that never illuminates at all is describing one fault, not two — and the fix may be a bulb.
  • Fitting an LED in place of the warning bulb can do the same thing, because an LED passes far less current than the filament it replaced. This catches people out during instrument cluster conversions and dashboard modifications, and the symptom appears later as a charging fault.
  • The lamp is a diagnostic instrument in its own right. It should light with the ignition on and the engine stopped, and go out once running. A lamp that never lights suggests the excitation path is broken; a lamp that stays on suggests the alternator is not producing.

A circuit reading low here is usually a short to ground in that wire, but the bulb, its holder and the cluster connection belong on the list before the alternator does — they are considerably cheaper, and the alternator may be blameless.
