What to do
The car will drive normally, so this is easy to ignore — do not. The transmission's cooling may not be working properly, and the damage that causes shows up later as an expensive fault. Avoid towing or long climbs until it is fixed. Ask whoever looks at it to check the cooler for blockage at the same time; leaves and road debris in the matrix are common and free to clear.
What this code means
The transmission fluid cooler control circuit has an open control circuit.
A transmission cooler is not always simply plumbed in — many are controlled, and this code names that control.
Cooling a transmission is a compromise in both directions. Too hot destroys the fluid; too cold is also wrong, because thick fluid raises pumping losses, delays torque converter lockup and costs fuel. So the flow is regulated — by a thermostatic valve, an electric pump, a bypass solenoid, or a fan the module can switch on.
A control fault usually defaults to full cooling, which is the safe direction and costs a little economy. But it can default to bypass, and a transmission that never reaches its cooler will overheat under load with no warning other than this code.
So this is worth fixing before towing or a long climb, even though the car feels entirely normal.
Check the cooler itself while the fault is being diagnosed. It sits in the airflow at the front of the car, and it collects leaves, insects and road debris — a blocked matrix produces the same overheating as a failed control and costs nothing to look at.
