What to do
The car will drive, often with reduced power and worse economy, and will usually fail an emissions test. A reference voltage fault is frequently shared — if other sensors are also reporting oddly, suspect the shared supply rather than several sensors.
What this code means
The reference voltage circuit for the intake air oxygen sensor on bank 1 is faulty.
An oxygen sensor in the intake is not a mistake in the title, and what it is for is genuinely counter-intuitive.
A conventional O2 sensor sits in the exhaust and reports what came out. This one sits in the intake and reports what is going in — specifically, how much of the incoming charge is recirculated exhaust rather than fresh air.
That matters because high-rate EGR has become the main NOx control on modern diesels, and metering it accurately by valve position alone is not good enough. Exhaust displaces oxygen, so measuring intake oxygen measures EGR rate directly — a far better number than inferring it from a valve that may be sooted.
The reference voltage is what makes the measurement possible. A wideband sensor of this type needs a precise reference to compare against; without it the sensor still responds and its output means nothing. So a reference fault produces a plausible, wrong EGR rate rather than an obvious failure.
And a wrong EGR rate is expensive in both directions. Too much recirculation soots the intake and costs power; too little raises NOx past the limit. The car usually resolves the ambiguity by disabling EGR entirely, which is safe for the engine and fails an emissions test.
