EGR Valve
Meters inert exhaust gas back into the intake to lower combustion temperature and suppress the formation of oxides of nitrogen. Because the returned gas contains no oxygen, it displaces air rather than adding to combustion — which is why a valve stuck open causes a rough idle and stalling, and one stuck shut causes detonation under load. It lives in soot and heat, and carbon is behind most of its failures: on the seat it holds the valve open, on the pintle it binds the travel, and in the passage behind it no valve position will produce the commanded flow.
