Act before the countdown does. NOx inducement escalates by law — warnings become a torque limit, then a speed limit or a no-restart condition — and the counters do not reset until the underlying fault is fixed and the system sees clean running. If the message is about the reagent (AdBlue/DEF), refill with fresh fluid from a sealed container before anything else; if it persists, have the dosing system diagnosed promptly rather than driving to the deadline.

These are legal codes as much as technical ones. Diesel emissions law requires the vehicle itself to police its NOx output: the module monitors tailpipe NOx, attributes an exceedence to its cause, and — if the fault is not fixed — escalates through a mandated inducement ladder: warnings, then a torque reduction, then a speed limit or a refusal to restart after fuelling. The escalation is not the manufacturer being difficult; it is the type approval the vehicle was sold under.

The SCR system behind them is chemistry with plumbing. Diesel exhaust fluid — a urea solution, the reagent — is dosed into the exhaust, where it converts NOx to nitrogen and water over the SCR catalyst. Every part of that chain can fail: an empty or wrongly filled tank, a doser that has crystallised shut, a pump losing pressure, fluid diluted by a helpful top-up with water.

The code's suffix names the attributed cause, which is the diagnosis half done. An empty-tank exceedence is a refill; an interrupted-dosing one is the doser and its lines; an EGR-flow one moves the investigation to the other NOx-control system entirely. Read the suffix before spending anything — the system has already done the attribution.
