The car drives normally now, but the vehicle is legally required to restrict itself progressively while it cannot dose — first warnings, then a countdown, then a speed limit, then no restart at all. That sequence carries on regardless of how well the car is running, so a fault that feels ignorable has a deadline attached. If a countdown of remaining starts is showing, treat it as exactly what it says.
What this code means
A circuit fault in the first reductant injector. This is the code where the consequences of a urea system failing become concrete, and they are unlike anything else in the corpus — because they are legal rather than mechanical.
A vehicle that cannot dose is required to stop you driving it. Emissions regulations do not merely require these systems to be fitted; they require the vehicle to enforce their use, through a staged process usually called inducement. It is progressive and it is announced:
- First a warning, with the fault stored.
- Then a more insistent warning, often with a countdown of remaining starts or distance.
- Then reduced power, or a hard speed limit — commonly around 30 mph, which makes the vehicle unusable on anything but local roads.
- Finally, no restart at all once the engine is switched off.
None of this is the car breaking. It is the car doing what it is legally obliged to do, and the countdown is displayed precisely so the driver has fair warning. The thing that catches people out is that the sequence continues while the car still drives perfectly well — there is no mechanical symptom to prompt action, so the warnings get postponed until the vehicle immobilises itself somewhere inconvenient.
