What to do
This has a deadline even though the car drives normally. A fault in the emissions monitoring system starts the staged inducement process — warnings, then a countdown, then a speed limit, then no restart — and it does not pause because nothing feels wrong. Deal with it while it is still a warning. Before agreeing to a sensor, ask for the connector and wiring to be inspected: these plugs sit under the vehicle and corrode, and that is a small fraction of the price of the part. Ask too whether the sensor is visible on the diagnostic bus at all — these sensors communicate digitally, so "no signal" can mean a wiring or communication fault rather than a failed sensor.
What this code means
A fault in the circuit of the first oxides-of-nitrogen sensor. This opens a family that runs to the end of P22xx's first quarter, and it is worth setting out properly, because a NOx sensor is unlike every other sensor in the corpus in three ways at once: what it measures, what it costs, and what happens to the driver when it fails.
What it measures, and why an ordinary oxygen sensor cannot. Oxides of nitrogen form when combustion is hot and there is plenty of oxygen — which is exactly the condition a diesel, or a lean-burn petrol engine, runs in most of the time. That is the trade every efficient engine makes: burn lean and hot for economy, and produce a pollutant that a conventional three-way catalyst cannot deal with, because it needs a rich exhaust to reduce. So a separate aftertreatment system is fitted, and it needs its own measurement. An oxygen sensor reports how much oxygen is present; a NOx sensor reports how much of a specific compound is present, which is a considerably harder measurement and is why the part is what it is.
Why there are usually two, and what the pair is for. One sits ahead of the reduction catalyst and one behind it. Neither reading is the point — the difference between them is, because that is the conversion efficiency, and conversion efficiency is the number the vehicle is legally required to monitor. This is the same structural idea the corpus uses for paired coolant sensors at P2182 and paired intake air sensors at P2199: one sensor gives a value, two give a measurement.
It is not a simple sensor and cannot be tested like one. A NOx sensor carries its own small controller, moulded into the connector body, and reports over the vehicle data bus rather than as an analogue voltage. Two consequences follow. A "circuit" code here can be a communication fault rather than a sensing fault — the sensor may be perfectly capable and simply not talking. And a multimeter tells you almost nothing, so the diagnosis depends on the scan tool seeing the sensor on the bus at all.
It is a consumable, and an expensive one. These sensors live in the hottest, dirtiest part of the exhaust and have a finite service life measured in years rather than in the life of the vehicle. They are routinely among the most expensive sensors fitted to a car. That combination — expected to fail eventually, expensive when it does — is worth knowing in advance rather than discovering at the counter.
And the consequence is legal rather than mechanical. A vehicle that cannot verify its emissions aftertreatment is required to enforce the point, through the staged inducement process set out in full at P2047: warnings, then a countdown, then a speed limit, then no restart. The car drives perfectly throughout. There is no mechanical symptom to prompt action, which is precisely why these get postponed until the vehicle immobilises itself somewhere inconvenient.
Before assuming the sensor: its connector sits under the vehicle in the salt and the spray, and a corroded connector or a chafed wire produces this code for a fraction of the price.
