U0316: Software Incompatibility With Vehicle Dynamics Control Module
What to do
Your stability control and traction control are switched off. The car drives and brakes normally — there is just nothing catching a mistake now.
Leave more room in the wet, take roundabouts and wet junctions gently, and expect wheelspin to be yours to manage. If the back of the car steps out, nothing is going to help.
Nothing is broken. This code means two computers are running software that does not belong together, and the car has switched the system off deliberately.
That is the right decision rather than an over-reaction. Stability control works by comparing what you asked the car to do with what it is actually doing, and every threshold in that comparison is written for your car's exact weight, wheelbase, tyre size and suspension. A system running another car's numbers would brake a wheel that did not need it, at speed — which is worse than doing nothing.
One thing to expect after it is fixed, so you do not think the repair failed. The steering angle and motion sensors have to be re-zeroed afterwards — car stationary, wheels straight, on level ground. Until that is done the warning light stays on and the system stays off. It is a five-minute procedure, not a second fault.

Stability control is a comparison rather than a mechanism. It takes what the driver asked for — steering angle, throttle, brake — and what the vehicle is actually doing — yaw rate, lateral acceleration, individual wheel speeds — and intervenes when the two diverge. Every threshold in that comparison is software, and every one of them is specific to the vehicle's mass, wheelbase, track, centre of gravity height, tyre size and suspension.
Which is why a mismatch here disables the system rather than degrading it. A stability system running thresholds written for a different vehicle would intervene at the wrong moments — braking a wheel that did not need it, or failing to brake one that did — and an intervention delivered wrongly at speed is worse than none at all. Switching off is the correct answer.
So the practical instruction is short: the vehicle now has the handling limits it has, with nothing catching a mistake. Leave more margin in the wet, expect no help if the back steps out, and remember that traction control has almost certainly gone with it — so wheelspin pulling out of a wet junction is now the driver's to manage.
One thing is worth expecting after this is repaired rather than being mistaken for a new fault. The steering angle sensor and the yaw and lateral acceleration sensors must be re-zeroed after the software is corrected — the vehicle stationary, wheels straight, on level ground.
