U059B: Invalid Data Received From Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Sensor Module

Get this seen promptly rather than living with it, and do not keep charging the car if it is telling you not to.

This module measures the main battery — its voltages, currents and temperatures. Everything the car does to protect that battery depends on those numbers, so when they stop making sense the car limits itself: reduced power, restricted or refused charging, no electric-only driving. Those limits are protecting an expensive and safety-relevant part.

If the car refuses to charge, do not keep trying, and do not leave it charging unattended overnight until it has been checked. A battery whose temperature cannot be measured reliably is one whose protection cannot work, and that is the one fault on an electric car worth being cautious about.

Mention anything relevant: deep water, a heavy impact underneath, any recent battery or coolant work. All three are real triggers.

What this code means

The hybrid/EV battery pack sensor module is broadcasting data that cannot be accepted as true. See U0400 for what an invalid-data code is and why the module it names is usually the messenger rather than the culprit.

This module is the traction battery's own instrumentation, and it is the most consequential sensing job on an electrified vehicle.

It measures cell voltages, pack current and temperatures throughout the pack, and everything the car does with its battery rests on those numbers: how much power may be drawn, how hard it may be charged, how much regeneration is allowed, what the range display says, and — critically — whether any part of the pack is heading somewhere it should not.

So implausible data here is treated seriously by the vehicle, and it should be. Expect reduced power, limited or refused charging, no electric-only running, or a refusal to enter Ready. These restrictions are protective and they are not negotiable from the driver's seat.

The commonest physical causes are the pack's own wiring rather than the module. Cell voltage sense harnesses run to every module in the pack, and their connectors work loose with vibration and corrode where moisture reaches them — a failure the corpus documents in the P0Bxx range, where the same fault appears from the battery's side.

Coolant is the other one, since liquid-cooled packs have coolant running near sensing wiring: a small internal leak produces impossible readings before it produces anything dramatic.

Do not ignore this one and keep driving indefinitely. A pack whose condition cannot be measured is a pack whose protection cannot work, and thermal faults are the one failure mode on these vehicles that does not stay small.
